What does a reading exam entail?

There are several options for candidates with dyslexia to take the VCA exam.

Basic VCA
For Basic VCA exams, candidates with dyslexia can opt for the read-aloud variant, with an extra function in the exam that reads the questions and possible answers through a headset. The candidate also gets 75 minutes for a reading exam instead of the regular 60 minutes. (A dyslexia statement is not necessary for a Basic VCA exam).

VOL-VCA and VIL-VCU
For candidates with dyslexia who have to pass a VOL-VCA or VIL-VCU exam, it is now possible to request an extended exam. The extended exam has a maximum duration of 120 minutes instead of the regular 75 minutes. There is no reading function available for a VOL-VCA or VIL-VCU exam.
Due to the extended time, our examiner will be at the exam location longer, for that reason we apply an extra surcharge of € 50 for a extended exam.

To be eligible for the extended exam, you must meet a number of conditions: The candidate must submit a dyslexia statement to Het Certificaat, which must comply with the guidelines set by the Dyslexia Foundation in the Netherlands (the statement must be submitted at least 8 days before before the exam). The dyslexia statement is assessed by us and after approval the exam can be registered.
For the time being, the extended exam can only be reserved for an in-company exam via our digital portal.

Can an interpreter or sign language interpreter be present during an exam?

It is not allowed to have the exams read by an interpreter in a language other than the language used in the exam. An interpreter is allowed to translate the introductory part of the exam.
It is permitted to use a sworn interpreter for the deaf under the following conditions:
Permission has been given in advance by eX:plain, whereby the exam center has indicated which exam it concerns, which location, number of candidates, invigilator(s) present, sign language interpreter present.

The sign language interpreter who assisted the candidate during the preparation for the exam may also be used as sign language interpreter during the exam. The sign language interpreter must be appointed by the VCA Exam Center as an invigilator and must have signed the confidentiality and independence statement; the sign language interpreter must be one of the authorized persons during the exam. The presence of the sign language interpreter must also be recorded in the protocol. The sign language interpreter must adhere to the content of the exam. It is not allowed to explain the content of the exam. N.B. Whether or not deaf interpreters are allowed is determined by the VCA Exam Bank from situation to situation. You must therefore motivate why the sign language interpreter is necessary.

Which question formats are included in the exam?

The VCA exam consists of different types of questions. To get a good idea of the different types of questions, it is best to take a look at the official test exam.

I want to view my exam or disagree with a question and/or answer during the VCA exam, what can I do?

If a candidate has passed, no inspection can be requested. A candidate who has failed can submit a request, via the exam office, to view the exam at eX:plain. As soon as the request is approved, you will receive dates and times from eX:plain, from which you can make a choice. The exam inspection is always at the office of eX:plain in Amersfoort. It is not allowed to take notes. There are no costs associated with the exam inspection. Only requests for inspection that are made within 6 weeks after the exam date will be processed.

I do not agree with a question or answer during the VCA exam, what can I do?

If a candidate does not agree with a question or answer, an objection can be submitted. This objection will only be considered if a candidate has failed.

If a candidate wishes to object to a question, this must be indicated to the examiner before the exam is closed. The examiner can then copy the correct question number onto the objection form.
